CERN | Scientific City-State

Rotterdam, NL

The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) is a self-governing, scientific city state, liken to that of the Vatican, operating invisibly from the countryside, concealing much of its physical manifestations below the Earth’s surface. The 628 meter circumference Proton Synchrotron, the 300 meter diameter Intersecting Collider Rings, and the 7 kilometer circumference Super Proton Synchrotron are embedded in engineered mounds, while the almighty Large Hadron Collider lies 100 meters below ground with only eleven access points dotting its 27 kilometer circumference. CERN’s search for unlocking the origins of the universe has created a religion of visitors flocking in pilgrimage to the campus out of fascination, curiosity, and the pursuit of scientific knowledge.
